How to process complex grief and navigate loss without closure

Grief isn’t a simple journey, especially when we’re grieving relationships that held both joy and pain. Whether you’re a clinician, therapist, supportive friend, or someone in the depths of loss, learning to process the layered emotions of complex grief can bring understanding, resilience, and a deeper compassion for ourselves and others.

What is complex grief?

Grief doesn’t follow a neat path, especially when we’re left to process relationships that held both a multitude of emotions. There are layers to grief—regrets, unspoken truths, moments of love mixed with difficulty. These layers shape our unique grief and teach us just as much about ourselves as they do about loss.

Complex grief refers to a loss without closure. It is when a person experiences a loss and has unresolved feelings that involve a wide range of emotions some of which may include anger, frustration, confusion, love, joy etc. This type of grief becomes complex because the person feels conflicted—unclear of how they should feel and should grieve.

Emotional layers of complex grief

Grieving doesn’t come with a written manual—there are no rights or wrongs. When dealing with complex grief, people often question themselves and their experience because there is no clear path. They can become paralyzed by their unique grief, stuck in a world of shoulds and coulds.

For those grieving, and those supporting others who are grieving, it is helpful to understand the emotional layers that shape complex grief so that this unfamiliar experience can be embraced willingly.

CONFUSION

  • Grief can be disorienting as individuals may struggle to reconcile conflicting emotions such as love and pain, which can create uncertainty about how they ‘should’ process grief.

ANGER

  • Anger is a common emotion felt in grief especially if the relationship involved hurt, betrayal or misunderstandings. Grievers might feel angry at the deceased for unresolved conflicts, or even at themselves for unspoken words or missed opportunities.

FRUSTRATION

  • Frustration often stems from a feeling of paralysis or feeling ‘stuck.’ Individuals may feel frustrated at the inability to resolve the past or gain closure on a relationship that was unfinished or challenging.

SADNESS

  • Sadness can appear in multiple ways when experiencing complex grief. Sadness can manifest with unresolved issues, unspoken words, or memories that can bring pain.

LOVE

  • Love remains a strong part of grief despite conflict or hardship. Memories of connection and intimacy are often mixed with feelings of hardship.

JOY

  • Joy can often resurface during grief and can be not only confusing but guilt inducing. Memories come to mind of laughter, happy memories, or a release from past difficulties that can be complicated.

Each of these emotional layers has a role in complex grief, and each offers unique insights into the grieving process. Understanding these emotions as part of a broader tapestry of grief allows for a more compassionate and comprehensive approach to healing. Both grievers and those supporting them can find comfort in knowing that there’s no need to suppress or solve any one emotion—rather, by welcoming each layer they are choosing to participate fully in the transformative journey of complex grief.

How to process complex grief

Processing complex grief, especially when emotions like anger, frustration, love, and regret are mixed with loss, requires compassionate and introspective work. Here are some strategies to navigate and process these layered feelings:

1. Acknowledge and Validate All Emotions

Recognize that complex emotions, even conflicting ones, are natural in grief. Allow yourself to feel both positive and negative feelings without judgment. Understand that you are allowed to grieve even if the relationship wasn’t perfect.

2. Set Boundaries for Reflection

Grieving a difficult relationship can feel overwhelming, so set aside specific times for reflection. This helps prevent being consumed by grief and allows for breaks when needed.

3. Accept that Some Questions May Go Unanswered

Complex relationships often leave us with unanswered questions or unresolved feelings. Accepting that you may never have all the answers can be freeing and allow you to focus on healing instead of ruminating.

4. Seek Support from a Therapist or Support Group

Working with a therapist or counselor who specializes in grief can provide the tools to navigate complicated emotions, especially if the relationship involved trauma or unresolved issues.

Processing complex grief takes time and patience, and the path will likely not be linear. With compassionate practices and support, you can find a way to honor your unique experience, allowing space for healing and acceptance.

The Continuous Journey of Grief

Grief is not something that concludes or resolves simply. It is a continuous journey that we carry with us and that shapes who we are over time. The experience of loss becomes woven into our identity, influencing how we perceive the world, relate to others, and view ourselves.

In complex grief, where emotions are layered and sometimes contradictory, finding meaning in the loss can be a transformative part of this journey. By embracing growth through the pain and conflict that grief often brings, we can cultivate a deeper sense of resilience, empathy, self-worth, and an understanding of boundaries.

This ongoing process allows us to honor the relationship, as complex as it may have been, and carry forward the insights it offers us.
